Operation Straw: STRAWkle Sesh

Join us for a monthly STRAWkle at Manly Cove.

Every week over summer 2017/18, a team of divers and snorkellers conducted an underwater clean of a specific area of Manly Cove, hauling in more than 2000 plastic straws as part of our citizen science project, Operation Straw.

Operation Straw is now in Phase 2 of the project, which involves using this data to encourage businesses to change their practices. But, we had such a great time STRAWkling the summer away, that we wanted to keep the good vibes going over the cooler months (and of course continue to collect those pesky straws from the ocean!).

STRAWkles will kick off at 9am at Manly Cove, meeting at the grassy area out the front of the art gallery.

Bring your snorkel, mask, and fins. Temperatures are starting to cool in Sydney so we highly recommend bringing a wetsuit if you've got one. If you don't have snorkel gear, contact Dive Centre Manly to rent some snorkeling equipment or a wetsuit.

Operation Straw is a collaboration between Dive Center Manly, SO Manly and Grumpy Turtle Design that has fostered a sense of stewardship over Manly Cove - a beloved dive site- while simultaneously collecting information on one of the most harmful plastic items; straws.

IT’S TIME TO TACKLE STRAWS IN MANLY COVE!

Every week over summer 2017/18, a team of divers and snorkellers will conduct an underwater clean of a specific area of Manly Cove.

The number of straws and type of straw will be recorded using data sheets. We will also be recording details like the tide, weather, the weather in the week leading up to the dive etc. to allow us as much understanding of the reasons why particular debris was found.

At the conclusion of the project, we will be left with a solid set of numbers surrounding exactly how many straws were found and where they originated from. If the numbers of straws found are significant, this could help spark change on a national and even global scale!

Bring your snorkel, mask, and fins. We also highly recommend bringing a wetsuit if you've got one - it might be summer but it can still get chilly in the water. If you don't have snorkel gear, contact Dive Centre Manly to rent some snorkeling equipment.
