Operation Straw: Last STRAWkle Session for the summer!

IT’S TIME TO TACKLE STRAWS IN MANLY COVE!

Every week over summer 2017/18, a team of divers and snorkellers have been conducting an underwater clean of a specific area of Manly Cove. This weekend is the last one for summer!

If you can't make it this weekend- don't worry- we are going to continue them monthly! See our events page or Facebook for more details.

The number of straws and type of straw will be recorded using data sheets. We will also be recording details like the tide, weather, the weather in the week leading up to the dive etc. to allow us as much understanding of the reasons why particular debris was found.

At the conclusion of the project, we will be left with a solid set of numbers surrounding exactly how many straws were found and where they originated from. If the numbers of straws found are significant, this could help spark change on a national and even global scale!

Bring your snorkel, mask, and fins. We also highly recommend bringing a wetsuit if you've got one - it might be summer but it can still get chilly in the water. If you don't have snorkel gear, contact Dive Centre Manly to rent some snorkeling equipment.

Operation Straw is a collaboration between Dive Center Manly, SO Manly and Grumpy Turtle Design that will foster a sense of stewardship over Manly Cove - a beloved dive site- while simultaneously collecting information on one of the most harmful plastic items; straws.

Dive Against Debris

Divers, freedivers and snorkelers….Join us on “Clean Up Australia Day” for our biggest and best Dive Against Debris EVER at Manly Cove!!

We will kick off the day with a clean-up dive, followed by our usual ‘single-use plastic free’ sausage sizzle with delicious food donated by our Infinity Bakery and The Butcher & The Chef (including vegan koftas). Don't forget to bring some cash as a gold coin donation is welcomed for the food- money will be pumped back into local projects to tackle plastic pollution.

Finally we’ll be counting and recording the trash-data, stick around to help as many hands will make light work!

The great thing about Dive Against Debris is the rubbish you remove can no longer harm marine life. Also, the data we report will help drive real change – changes on a personal level, changes to the behaviour of local businesses and even changes to government policy to help stop this mess at the source.

How to get involved:

1) Register for a ticket (free) and any rental gear needed (to say thank you for helping, rental gear is half-price for this event).
2) Share the event with your friends – the more divers/snorkelers we have in the water, the bigger impact we will make!
3) Come to Dive Centre Manly by 9am on Sunday 4th March to complete registration form and we will direct you to Manly Cove for gear allocation, gear-up and briefing.

If you don’t bring a dive-buddy, don’t worry! We'll pair up buddies on the day 😊

After you’ve dived Manly Cove clean, stick around to ‘dance the beach clean’ with ‘Beat The Bottle’ – a land based clean-up with live music from FBi radio DJs as well as more delicious eats!

Essential safety points:

- SCUBA Diving will be undertaken by certified divers only – please bring evidence of your certification. The dive site is suitable for all experience levels.

- All participants (SCUBA, freedivers and snorkelers) must attend the safety briefing held prior to the dive at Manly Cove.

- Gloves are a must! Bring your dive gloves or gardening gloves…. Dive gloves will be available to buy at Dive Centre Manly on the morning if you need some. We will provide net bags for rubbish collection.

- Animals colonise our trash, so…..When cleaning up, leave behind glass bottles and cans because these often have blue-ringed octopus living in them! Ensure that you tip out any sand /sediment from trash before collecting items like bags/cups etc.

Straws Film Screening

Please join SO Manly, Convenient for who?, Plastic Free Manly and 4 Pines Brewing Company for the FREE film screening of the short film ‘STRAWS’.

Directed by Linda Booker and segments narrated by Oscar winner Tim Robbins, ‘STRAWS’ is an entertaining and educational film that engages with audiences about the problems caused by plastic pollution and how we as individuals can be part of the solution.

Businesses like 4Pines have worked hard to eliminate the access of straws in their venues, and the response has been extremely positive. As a consumer, just by saying ‘No straw in my drink thanks’ can make a huge positive impact in reducing single use plastic waste. If you are a business owner and would like to hear how your business can reduce or eliminate the consumption of plastic or single use straws, we would love to have you join us. Your involvement can help reduce the detrimental impacts single use plastics place on our environment and oceans.

Date: Sunday 15th October
Time: Film Starts at 6pm
Where: 4Pines Truck Bar, Brookvale
What Else: Guest speakers, raffle prizes, good beer and delicious food available at the venue.
Tickets are FREE but please RSVP through Eventbrite
